Newcastle Chairman Freddy Shepherd has revealed the club considered sacking Lee Bowyer after his brawl with team-mate Kieron Dyer.

Bowyer was fined £200,000 by the club, the equivilant of 6 weeks wages and was the maximum penalty the club could impose.

And Shepherd has admitted he came vlose to sacking the former Leeds star

Shepherd said:

"We certainly considered sacking Bowyer. We could have done - it was gross misconduct. But we thought a fine and a final warning was fitting."

When asked if Bowyer was lucky to still be a Toon player, he added:

"He should go down on his hands and knees."
