Newcastle defender Aaron Hughes has stated his belief that the Magpies can handle the demanding fixture list as they chase 2 trophies.
The
Hughes said:
"This is a critical period for every player," explained the former trainee. "It's important that we all keep ourselves fit and focused and on a personal level I need to make sure I'm ready to fill the spaces created by injuries.
"This is such a demanding stage of the season. We played five games in 19 days before international week and, for those of us away with our countries there are more games coming up.
"When we return to
"We were in exactly the same position 12 months ago and we had all the Champions League group games the year before that.
"We have experience of dealing with a heavy workload and that will stand us all in good stead."
Hughes is still feeling fit after not being a regular all season but has recently broken back in to the squad under Graham Souness.
He added:
"I've been waiting for my chance for some time and now I have the opportunity to get a run in the side," he added. "If I can re-establish myself as a first-team player then, when the other lads are fit again, I can give the manager a bit of a headache.
"I'm used to playing at the business end of the season and it's traditionally a busy time. I don't suppose the younger players really notice it as much as the older lads but the fixture congestion can take its toll.
"Age wise I see myself as somewhere in the middle but the older you become the more important it is to take care at this stage of the season.
"Every season the games seem to get harder, the standard rises and we're involved in more matches than ever before. It's just about making sure most of the players are fit for most of the matches."
