Newcastle United have been successful in their attempts to sign midfielder Amdy Faye from Portsmouth.

Faye passed a medical before agreeing to a 4-year-contract with the Magpies for a fee believed to be in the region of £2 million.

Souness said:

“We are delighted to have him on board and he will be a really valuable addition to our squad,"

"Amdy is a defensive midfield player which is an area we have been looking to strengthen."

Faye will link up with former Auxerre team-mate, Jean-Alain Boumsong, also new to the Newcastle team.
