JEAN-ALAIN Boumsong could well be a Newcastle United defender within the next 48-hours, according to his agent - who claims that Rangers are close to an agreement with the Magpies. Graeme Souness claimed earlier this week that he would NT be making another bid for the French international, having already had two bids for the former Auxerre defender turned down.

Alex McLeish was at St James' Park on Wednesday night however, as Newcastle took on Arsenal.

Nothing has been confirmed yet, but Willie McKay, Boumsong's agent said: "The clubs got a bit closer tonight. It could be the next 24 hours. We're as close as we've ever been to doing a deal.

The 25-year-old has a clause in his contract though, which entitles him to 15% of the transfer fee - although reports suggest that the player has lowered his demand to 10%.

"That is what we are waiting for," added McKay.

Titus Bramble and Laurent Robert have been linked with a move to Ibroz in exchange for Boumsong, but McKay said: "There's no other player involved."

Newcastle have this week confirmed the signing of Chelsea defender Babayaro, who will join the club tomorrow.
