Former Newcastle United defender Jonathon Woodgate, is finially set to make his debut for Real Madrid. If all goes well, the England international will play his first game for Real Madrid in January, after signing from Newcastle for £13.5 million in August.

The 24-year-old missed the start of 2004/05 season due to a serious thigh injury picked up in the April clash with Chelsea. The injury ended his season and his hopes of being on the plane to Portugal for England's Euro 2004 campaign.

The former Leeds ace was poised to make his debut for the Spannish giants back in October, but suffered a recurrence of the injury.

Woodgate should make his debut in January though, and said: "I feel a lot better and with every day that goes by I improve a bit more.

"I just hope my luck changes in the New Year and that I will be able to make my debut at last. I hope that I'll be fully recovered in January or February and be able to train at the same rhythm as the rest of the team."

He added: "I'm working hard every day so that I can recover as soon as possible. I can't wait to join up with the rest of the team although I'm sure it won't be long before I can do that."
