Newcastle United have approached Rangers over defender Jean Alain Boumsomg, Graeme Souness has revealed. We al know that the Magpies' back-line MUST be improved in January, and Newcastle's Scottish boss has revealed that the Ibrox defender is on his post-Christmas shopping-list.

Speaking to the Official Newcastle website, Souness explained: "I can confirm we have been in touch with Rangers and he is one of the players we want, but at the end of the day he (Boumsong) is a Rangers player, he is under contract there, and it would be wrong of me to go into any more detail.

"We know where we need to strengthen, and we know the ones we would like. We have had players watched and have made contact with some clubs.

"I would like to reassure our supporters that we are pursuing the players we need."
