Newcastle United players have been told that no official Christmas party will be held for them this year. Manager Graeme Souness has made the decision not to hold a party but has said that he expects the players to have a quiet drink together. Souness said: "I cannot stop the players from having a quiet drink together - but there will be no official Christmas party for them.

"Word would leak out where they were going and all sorts of people would be up there waiting for them."

It is understood that the team have been ordered to turn up for training on Christmas Day.

Newcastle take on Sporting Lisbon at St James' Park on Thursday in the UEFA Cup, and then, on Sunday, Liverpool at Anfield in the Premiership.
