Following Saturday's 2-2 draw at the Riverside, Boro defender Ugo Ehiogu feels that his side can match Newcastle United this season, but also backs Alan Shearer to break Jackie Milburn's goal scoring record at St James' Park.

On Newcastle, Ehiogu said:

"Newcastle are in our sights.

"There wasn't much in it and we can draw strength from that.

"There has been a gap between ourselves and Newcastle for several years now.

"But the players Steve McClaren has brought to Middlesbrough this summer are used to big matches, success and winning trophies.

"The level of expectancy here will not worry them and each year the rest of us have improved.

"That should augur well for the future."

On Shearer:

"The Premiership will be a poorer place without him.

"Even I will miss the hand-in-the-air celebration - it's just a shame he has scored so many against Middlesbrough!

"Who would bet against him getting the 27 goals he needs to become all-time top scorer?

"He's been an excellent professional over the years and he's a real handful, even though he's 34."
