Butcher was a player under the management of Sir Bobby Robson when he was at Ipswich and again at International level said of Sir Bobby,

"He's a wonderful manager, I have heard he won't get a contract at the end of the season but that's not the sort of way to treat someone who has resurrected Newcastle.”

He continued,

"He's such a great figure in the game and has worked wonders there. He was such a great manager to me and I used to love training under him."

He claimed to have “modelled” himself on Robson and is appalled that Freddy Shepherd will not be offering him a further contract.
