Nicky Butt appears set for a move to Newcastle upon his return to the country. He is currently with Man Utd on their tour of the U.S.A. but failed to feature in their first match, against Bayern Munich.
Following the departure of Gary Speed to Bolton, and the likelihood that Kieron Dyer will play out wide, Newcastle are left with only two recognised central midfielders in Lee Bowyer and Jermaine Jenas, neither of whom could really be described as a holding player.
The Journal among many other papers ran a story this morning claiming Butt would join as soon as he returned from across the pond, and the fee could be from anywhere between £2.5 million and £5 million, depending on what paper you read. Seemingly a bargain, considering the player has won numerous trophies and numerous caps for England, and was dubbed player of the World Cup by Pele in 2002.
It is widely believed that there are just a few loose ends that need to be tied up before Butt joins up with the squad.
