18-year-old defender Steven Taylor has signed a new deal with Newcastle United, which will keep him at the club for another three years.

The news will be a boost to the Magpies' who face losing Andy Griffin to Porstmouth.  Taylor will also provide good cover for Jonathon Woodgate or Titus Bramble if either of the pair were to miss a game through injury or suspension.

Liverpool have been linked with Taylor, but Magpies' chaiman Freddy Shepherd said:

"Steven is a top-class player for his age and we are naturally delighted that he has agreed to sign a new contract with the club.

"His recent progress shows the value of our academy and we hope he will have a long and successful career here at Newcastle United."

Taylor commented:

"The new contract is marvellous news for me and I'm really thrilled to have signed it.

"Being a Geordie, I'm delighted my future is here."

In other news, Newcastle United along with Charlton, Portsmouth, West Ham and Blackburn to name a few, have been linked with Arsenal defender, Martin Keown.

The veteran centre-half is out of contract in the summer at the end of the season and is wanted by several Premiership clubs.
