Aston Villa manager David O'Leary is annoyed at the fact that Shag Given was allowed to take his time with goal kicks, and also added that the sending off of Newcastle's Andy O'Brien early in the game was the worst thing that could have happened for his team.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "It was a poor game in the end. We played our best stuff when they had 11 men.

"After that (the red card), they've come for a draw. They wasted a lot of time and the referee let them get away with that and the pace and the tempo went out of the game."

After the game O'Leary refused to comment on wether or not O'Brien deserved to go off, saying that he had not seen the challenge, but Vassell claimed that he was pulled down.

O'Leary added: "Vassell said he was through and was pulled down. I don't want anyone to go off but it's down to the referee, but it hasn't done us any good."
