Newcastle United boss Sir Bobby Robson has warned Michael Bridges that he will have to prove himself if he wants a long-term deal at St James' Park. Bridges joined the Magpies' on-loan from Leeds and is available on a Bosman in the summer. Jimmy Walker

BRIDGES MUST PROVE HIMSELF

Bridges has expressed his desire for a permanent move to the Tyneside club, but manager Robson wants Bridges to prove himself first.

Robson said, "We haven't borrowed him. We've brought him here to have a look at him. He has got to prove his form and his fitness. If he does that, I don't think there is any doubt that we will sign him.

"I like what I've seen of him so far. We knew his situation, we knew he was coming up on a Bosman and that he had told Leeds he was not going to sign a new contract.

"We know what he was like at Sunderland and we know what he did at Leeds in his first season. We've kept a good eye on him and for some reason Leeds have not played him because he is not going to sign a new contract.

"Maybe they should have done, but that's not my problem. We've tried to get him in the past and now we have done."
