NO NEED FOR BUTT

You may have read recently that Sir Bobby Robson was interested in bringing transfer-listed Nicky Butt to Newcastle from Man Utd. While Robson admits he is keen on Butt, he has also calimed that he has no need for him at St James' Park.

"Nicky Butt is someone I admire very much," said the Newcastle boss. "He did very well for England in the 2002 World Cup and is a real players' player - a fantastic player, in fact.

"But we have Hugo Viana and if we bought a midfield player we would have to let him go. Not wanting Butt is proof of what we think of Hugo.

"Then we have Lee Bowyer, who I like very much of course, Jermaine Jenas is fantastic and Gary Speed is good for another year."

Newcastle would have to fork out a fair bit of money for the England midfielder who reportedly wants a five-year contract to match his current £45,000-a-week deal at Old Trafford, aswell as the reported £5million transfer fee that Man Utd want.

A source close to thw Toon told the People: "We don't necessarily need the player anyway and we will not be going anywhere near him at that price.

"We suspect he will still be at Old Trafford in the summer and then he will have to rethink his demands."
