Reports coming out of Scotland over the weekend said that United had been in touch with Celtic about their 32-year-old striker.

But Newcastle today insisted that this is not the case and in fact it was actually news to them.

Indeed, a source close to the United board said today: "Henrik Larsson has never been mentioned in any talks we have had about future transfer targets."
