Ameobi responded to the suggestion by insisting his heart was still with England.

The FA stated that no player could change allegiance after playing for their country.

"Once a player has represented his country in a competitive international fixture - and Shola has played for England in several, including the under-21s' last game in Istanbul - he cannot go on to play for another country," read a statement on the FA website.

Eriksson said: "If we have no injuries then I think we are covered everywhere in the squad. But we're less covered up front than anywhere else.

"The one thing we have to concentrate on is to prepare everything we can from Christmas onwards for the Euro 2004 finals.

"We must try to learn from the World Cup - that what we want, at any cost, is to have fit players. That's the only wish I have for Christmas."
