Newcastle United host Manchester City tomorrow evening in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup. Newcastle go into the game on the back of their second humiliating derby defeat of the year after losing at Sunderland on Sunday lunchtime, but have two wins, one draw and three defeats from their last six games in all competitions. Manchester City also lost at the weekend, but to Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea side. They have three wins and three defeats from their last six games in all competitions. 

Newcastle are without Steven Taylor (hamstring) and Fabricio Coloccini (groin) but welcome back Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa who returns from suspension.

Manchester City are expected to drop keeper Joe Hart, as they did in the previous round. He will be replaced by Costel Pantilimon. Manager Manual Pellegrini could also be without Vincent Kompany who is struggling with a groin problem.

Jack Rodwell (hamstring) is fit to play.

Alan Pardew said ahead of the game;

"The derby was a really demanding game on the legs and on the emotions. We're disappointed for the fans and ourselves. But if we could beat Manchester City I think it would get people talking because then we'd be down to the last eight and it all becomes a bit serious then.

I think any team in the Premier League can consider this a tournament they can win. For the Champions League clubs maybe it's a little down on their agenda but it's high on our agenda.

For us this year it is a priority. We want to win a trophy for our fans. If we could get past Manchester City it would be a great way to put away the disappointment of Sunderland, but that's easier said than done."

He added;

"It's still tough to beat them....they have a squad of 24 international players so we're coming up against 11 internationals even if it is a slightly weakened City team. When they turn on their turbo chargers, with the players they've got, they're almost impossible to deal with.

But they're vulnerable as well and particularly away from home results haven't been as good as they would like. That is some comfort for us, that we could catch them on an off night.

If your desire to win something is stronger than the opposition, then it does give you a slight benefit. We'll be leaning on that for sure."

I do feel we need to play our strongest team if we want to beat Man City, even if they play their second team.

Man City's defeat at Chelsea leaves them with a real uphill struggle to win the league. Most matches will be won at a canter by all three of Man U, Chelsea and Man C, so these unpredictable fixtures are not so many, and each one counts a lot. But Man City won't give up, and the defeat at Chelsea is good news for us - it increases their chances of fielding a 2nd string team.

Ya it's just the extra running around with a short squad that hurts my spirit. And I wonder when those shots on goal are finally going to start going in for the lads, you knwo, when Cisse ISN't offside.

i was going to say what a good match mbiwa had until he switched off twice and let them score 2 goals.

we played well with a makeshift team and just need to start converting some of the chances we had.
