CC Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Chelsea v Newcastle Utd

Newcastle United face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge tomorrow night in the 3rd round of the League Cup. Newcastle go into the game on the back of three wins in six games with one draw and two defeats, whilst Chelsea host on the back of 6 consecutive wins and 25 goals this season in all competitions.
Steve Harper who picked up a collarbone injury at the weekend is absent, leaving Tim Krul to cover between the sticks, whilst Leon Best (ankle) could feature after recovering from his injury. Steven Taylor (shoulder), Dan Gosling (knee) and Danny Simpson (ankle) all remain long term absentees.
Hughton is likely to run with a mix of experience and fresh legs as he gives his key players a break. Cheick Tiote is likely to get pitch time, whilst Sol Campbell is set to make his debut.
Chelsea will be without Frank Lampard (hernia) and John Terry (ribs), whilst Carlos Ancelotti has indicated he will play several younger players as he rests bigger names for Saturday’s game against Manchester City.
Fact: Newcastle United have not won at Chelsea since 1986 and Chelsea have won their previous 4 League Cup games against Newcastle.
Fact: Newcastle have gone out of the competition in the 3rd round in the last 3 seasons, against Arsenal, Tottenham and Peterborough.

Van Aanholt. Insult to injury. And Raylor already in the book. The lad just isn't an RB at this level.
Kinda thinking CH had his tongue in cheek a bit in his comments about this competition, given the lineup out there. Williamson, Barton, Carroll, Tiote, Nolan and Ben Arfa on the bench against Chelsea? How, precisely, is that squad supposed to win against a Chelsea squad featuring Terry, Anelka, Sturridge, Benayoun and Zhirkov? Hell, Van Aanholt is a cut above a couple of the players we have starting...

Cannot believe I missed the 2nd half. Gutted, nevermind - progressing in the comp is great - progressing instead of Chelsea is awesome!

Yeah, yeah-you're right about Shola lmk. I hope this is the start of a run of form. When he's on, he can score in bunches.
Bar the first and last part of the game, we did well, and when we were passing it around we were the better side by a distance. Would have been a different story if Colo and Williamson played the full game togethor.
Smithy looked off the pace, Vuckic did well in parts of the game but got lost in others. Lovernkrands struggled to get in the game, but thought Shola played a good game, looked dangerous, and a real threat.
Ferguson played well, and linked up with Jonas and did the over lap

And you're right about the pen, lmk. I play coed football occasionally (I know, y'all don't do that over there) and I've seen 8 stone girls absorb harder tackles and stay up. I'm actually not exaggerating.

Just watched the highlights on bbc. If you want a laugh watch the highlights when two mockney mug fans are taking the p155 out of Jonas' gesturing........ just prior to him taking the corner when Shola scored the winner. Wish they would have showed their faces.
Will be great for the young lads that came in and obviously Shola.
