Chris Hughton appers to have made a good impression on Aston Villa's Marlon Harewood, whose loan deal expired on Boxing Day, as he has told the Journal of his interest to return to Newcastle and he doesn't mind whether its till the end of the season or a proper contract. Manager Chris Hughton who has failed to give anything away prior to the January transfer window also commented on the situation.

Harewood was quoted saying; 

"I don't know what's going to happen, no-one has told me anything yet. Players don't really get involved in that - you never really know until it actually happens so I'll just have to wait and see now.

But my time at Newcastle has been unbelievable. I've really enjoyed it, the fans have been great, the lads have been great and I feel I've got better with every game."

He added;

"I'd love to come back until the end of the season or longer and finish the job now but it's up to the gaffer if he wants me and the two clubs to sort it out now.

But I think if I come back it will be difficult in the second half of the season.

We wouldn't change where we are in the league for anything but there is pressure being at the top of the division, you're there to be shot at.

I think the way we've been playing means that everyone wants us to beat us and that is something that you have to deal with.

There's going to be pressure on the lads in the second half of the season because of how well they've done so far. Everyone will want to knock us off the top. But this is a good side, we've proved that."

Hughton said on the subject;

“This was Marlon’s last game, so for the time being at least, he’s reverted to being an Aston Villa player.

I’ve spoken to everyone concerned, and we now have to make a decision with regard to Marlon’s future, just like we also have to make a decision with regard to the centre-half position.

We’re in the process of weighing up all the options we have. As soon as we’ve done that, we’ll endeavour to make the decision we need to and try to tie up things from there.

We have options, but the main thing I want to avoid is any of the situations dragging on deep into January. My biggest hope is that we can put everything to bed early.

We’re aware of the situation, and we know we have decision we have to make.

We’re in the process of making those and I’m confident it won’t be something that becomes a protracted issue.”

What do we reckon? I'd say get him back in on loan, started to get goals towards the end after a bad start, and if he's free I don't see why not.

I hate to be contrarian, and Marlon has come around, but he's similar to our other strikers, no? I could see us releasing him if we have someone else in mind who brings another element to our attack...we all know something needs tweaking there after today's game...

Plus, that sort of flexibility is part of the point of the loan system. Anyway, with Heskey crocked off and on and Carew maybe on the way out, it could just be that Villa want him back.

I agree, to a degree. He's similar in that he's a big target man, but I think he's got slightly better shooting ability than the others at the cost of some other skill sets. Carroll and Ranger do more with the ball as far as getting others involved, but haven't scored as often as he has. Ameobi manages to make himself available more often than Harewood, but still struggles to put it on frame occasionally.

Regardless, I'd rather bring in someone else for the striker role. Lovenkrands is our only pace in the attacking third right now, and we still don't have anyone with the dribbling ability to make a run at goal (as you pointed out in another thread)

Valid point, Luke. I wouldn't mind having him around a bit longer. But I also agree with waffles that we lack pace up front. Our attack is one-dimensional. A big striker knocks the ball down or holds it up for midfielders joining the play (thus all of Nolan's goals) or tries to shoot himself with our without taking a touch (Shola). We don't get much movement off the ball in/around the opponents box. We don't use the ball very well in the same area. I think we're going to be frustrated much more by teams the second time we play them because of this. We need to be harder to defend, less predictable, in my opinion.

In this league Harewood works, with the players we have around him the big target man has worked a treat. If we can extend then why not, he found his form so get him back.

He has scored a few goals but wouldnt say his performances have been startling. With the three big lads we have (four if you count Nolan which I would) we have enough target men.

I would much prefer a tricky striker.

Actually, the figure I've seen is 1.25-1.5M...of course, Leeds could always just let him walk for nothing at the end of the season...

If we could sign him on a pre contract in Jan and then get him at the end of the season and save the cash. We have forwards and would rather have the cash and then invest on another player. Same as Simpson, extend the loan if possible then get him for nothing in the summer
