Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Cardiff City v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk
September 12 2009

Newcastle travel to the Cardiff City Stadium seeking their 6th consecutive win in all competitions this season, whilst Cardiff, who are just 3 points behind Newcastle in the Championship table host the match on the back of a 2-0 defeat against Doncaster Rovers prior to the international break.

Newcastle will be without strikers Shola Ameobi who has undergone surgery on his injured foot and Andy Carroll who is still recuperating from a groin strain. Nile Ranger will once again start upfront.

Jonas Gutierrez is unavailable as he struggles with a hamstring injury, whilst Peter Lovenkrands isn't yet match fit.

Fabricio Coloccini has returned from International duty and will be assessed ahead of the match, whilst Nicky Butt is fit to play.

Once again the bench is likely to include youngsters Kazenga LuaLua, Ryan Donaldson and Haris Vuckic, who has scored four times in the last four reserve matches.

For Cardiff City, former Newcastle United player and current leading goal-scorer in England, Michael Chopra, will be joined upfront by Jay Bothroyd who has recovered from a hamstring injury just in time.

Cardiff will be pleased to welcome back their international players David Marshall, Gavin Rae and Gabor Gyepes who have all returned without injury.

Striker Ross McCormack is sidelined with a hamstring injury and defender Kevin McNaughton misses out with an ankle injury; however midfielder Joe Ledley will play whilst wearing a cast to protect a broken wrist.

Watch out for Alan Smith who has vowed not to shave his beard off until Newcastle stop winning games!

Fact: Chopra has scored 7 goals in 8 games this season!

Fact: Cardiff last beat Newcastle United in 1981 (they last met in 1984) but have a 100% record at their new stadium.

We are missing Jonas and his runs down the left. Barton's passing has been suspect today... Ranger holding the line well, but needs a speedier player behind him... should look and do better when Lovenkrands is fit.

We have to stop giving away stupid fouls but will need more goals to kill this off and take the points.

Nice goal Colo, who actually looks up for this today

To be fair it took half a second for the ball to go from from foot to arm. Stephen Taylor didn't move his arm at all. It would have been a harsh penalty.

Well done lads. We got a little complacent near the end - pity about Smith's sending off but we have to learn to see out these games.

Pity we didnt have more fit strikers as we should have had more.... back to the top we go.(Sm60)

Great commitment by Smith to take one for the team. Butt should replace him on Wednesday, while we haven't conceded a goal since the opening day of the season! Well Done lads...(Sm152)

I'll take an ugly 1-0 at Cardiff any day of the week. We've gotten 2 of the 3 hardest away matches out of the way (at Brom, and at Cardiff), and the last tough away match (at Boro) isn't until March.

We don't play another Top 6 team until November when we're at Sheffield. Hopefully, we can get fit by then.

Great result and another 3 points in the bag. It is good to play well but I don't care if we play sh@t as long as we keep getting the 3 points.

Watched 75 minutes in the pub and it weren't the best performance but had to miss the rest of it to catch a flight back home, what did Smith do, it sounds like he took one for the team

He took down Bothroyd right at the top of the box while he already had a yellow. There wasn't any real maliciousness and it was purely professional foul. Had Smith not taken him down, it was a clear run onto Harper.

3 more points in the bag (Sm128)

But someone needs to have a word with Smithy and explain that you cant bulldoze people on the field and expect to get away with it
