Chris Hughton has picked Alan Smith to captain today’s friendly against Darlington whilst Kazenga LuaLua will start upfront alongside Shola Ameobi. First team regulars, Ryan Taylor, Steven Taylor, Kevin Nolan, Joey Barton, Habib Beye and Damien Duff also make the starting eleven.

Hughton has promised to give players more pitch time today and not to meddle too much with the team once they start the game.

Considering the competition and the fact that it was a friendly, I think he just had the day off so Forster and Krul could get some time. Each of them played a half.
