In either a cruel April Fools or alternatively a scary career move, it was announced late last night that Alan Shearer is set to be unveiled tomorrow as Newcastle United's temporary manager until the end of the season. For the majority of fans (even those who would rather see Shearer gain some experience before trying his hand where he is a local hero) it is a welcome appointment. With Newcastle propping up the top of the relegation zone and 8 games away from a potential disaster, Mike Ashley has yet again pulled it out of the bag, just as he did when he appointed Kevin Keegan.

However, making a point and proving it are two different things. It would appear Alan has stepped in because the club are in crisis, previously he has declined the role and under better circumstances. But would Mike Ashley appoint him full time come the end of the season whether the club survive or not? And would Shearer accept a full time contract?

The announcement comes before current interim manager Joe Kinnear undergoes a series of tests which would have determined the date he was set to return to the touchline. It is now thought that Kinnear will remain with the club and take a role upstairs, possibly as Director of Football. Whilst current caretaker manager Chris Hughton is likely to resume his original coaching role and support Shearer in his bid for survival.

The fans will no doubt give Mr Shearer a welcome reception as he steps out at St James' Park on Saturday for the 3pm game against Chelsea, before launching into a battle of must win games against Stoke, Spurs, Portsmouth, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Fulham and Aston Villa.

Former Chairman John Hall has applauded the appointment;

He said;

"I would have preferred him to come back as long-term manager because I've always felt he was the only man at this moment in time who could manage Newcastle.

He's the most dedicated professional I've ever known in my time in the game. Desperate measures, desperate times; There's a gap opening up at the bottom of the table and he'll galvanise all the fans - let's hope he galvanises the players.

It's got to happen on the park. If it doesn't happen on the park we'll go down.

They have too high regard for Alan Shearer and they know he's coming in, in very, very difficult circumstances. I'm certain no one would judge him on these eight games."

Once again Sir John has it spot on. He may perfom a miracle, but if he doesn't, you simply can't judge his managerial abilities on these next 8 games.
