Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has expressed his relief that Newcastle defender Steven Taylor will not be punished for his challenge on Cristiano Ronaldo in midweek. Fergie's reasoning? Because Taylor will now be available to face Arsenal and Chelsea in Newcastle's forthcoming fixtures. Manchester United, despite being top of the table with 65 points and a game in hand, still need to ward off Chelsea who are chasing them on 58 points and who have found their winning form of late, whilst Arsenal are clamouring for 4^th place currently with 49 points.

The incident on Wednesday night saw Taylor pick up a yellow card prior to an alleged bust up in the tunnel with Ronaldo and Rooney.

Sir Alex said of the situation;

"The disciplinary situation does confuse you at times.

No-one is really clear about it. But in actual fact we did not want the boy suspended because now he can play against Chelsea and Arsenal.

In Newcastle's position, with the injuries they have at the moment, it would have been devastating for them to lose that player. I am not really upset about it at all."

Taylor picked up his 5^th yellow card of the season but escapes a 1 match ban thanks to an amnesty which came into place from the 1st March. From now until the end of the season players need to clock up 10 yellow cards before a 2 match suspension is imposed.

why would fergie want taylor to play against chelsea and arsenal? he'll probably get sent off or give a penalty away in at least one of them, since he has become a total liability! the lad really cares, but he gets too wound up, the bigger the game the more likely he is to act like a hungover thug in a sunday league game.

yeah, its bound to be down to his frustration, the same frustration the crowd feel when it goes so badly so often. i wonder if anyone is talking to him behind the scenes, telling him he can do much more to help if he doesnt lose his head on the pitch. it doesnt look like it, does it?

For me tayls needs an arm around him and kk would of been perfect to do it but not be anyway he needs to get his act together and quick before its to late

Taylor can be a bit reckless at times but he's a young lad and he's also a Black and White through and through.

I would hate for NUFC to sell him because in a few years he could well be the next John Terry or Rio Ferdinand.
