Viduka To Be Called For International Duty If Fit

Mark Viduka could be called up for Australia's World Cup Qualifier against Uzbekistan on 1st April. The Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek has indicated that if Viduka, who is currently struggling after aggravating his Achilles injury during training last week, shows the quality he needs in his international side then there is no reason why he should not be named in the squad.

Verbeek said;

"The striking role's not been easy to fill with Mark Viduka not playing. Is he likely to come back for the Uzbekistan game? I really, really hope so.

If Viduka shows me he is still the same player we know, there's no reason not to select him. So far he has never given me the idea that he's not interested anymore."

Viduka, who is likely to leave Newcastle at the end of the season, will miss the match against Chelsea on April 4th if he travels with the Australian team. This will be a huge blow for caretaker manager Chris Hughton and the fans who know that despite his 33 years of age, Viduka adds something to the team which will surely be missed if absent.

Viduka who has featured just 6 times this season due to his Achilles injury was not named in the squad to face Manchester United in midweek Chris Hughton explained his absence on nufc.co.uk

He said;

"It's just a minor injury which Mark picked up in training.

It kept him out of the Man United game but we don't expect him to be out for too long."

Aggravated his achilles injury in training prior to the Utd game, hence why he wasn't in the team.
