Local Legend Sir Robert William Robson

On the 18th of February 1933 born in sacristan County Durham where he lived with his 5 brothers and their father who worked as a coal miner and it was through his dad that his love with football and Newcastle began.

To write about a man who I consider an icon but not just in footballing terms as a person and a English man is not an easy task just think of how the man has lived his life to date. His whole attitude is an inspiration to us all, I mean back in august he told us all he had admitted defeat to his very long battle with lung cancer and he commented "my condition is described as static and has not been altered since my last bout of chemotherapy ... I am going to die sooner rather than later. But everyone has to go sometime and I have enjoyed every minute" That statement alone tells you all more than I ever could about football's best granddad and even now he still has our club firmly in his heart and mind even now in his last days he still talks to the press and on numerous occasions given us his thoughts on what has and still is happening to our club.

All this thinking about the great man makes me think would Newcastle's fortunes have been different if during his 1999 to 2004 stint as the clubs manager if his time at the club ended say 07 or 08 and I really think we would have stayed with the big teams and have regular European football gracing st James park. I mean he has managed teams such as Barcelona, Porto, Psv and of course England and won many, many accolades and he has been talked of and is considered on the same managerial plateau as Sir Alex and if we had stayed amongst the big 4 a short while longer we have all seen the gap that emerged in the years to follow. But hey who knows? Well maybe bobby does!!!

One last thing before we end I ask you all to find the bbc video of our bobby receiving the freedom of the city of Durham and yes he looks very frail and ill not how we want to remember him but what is apparent for any viewer is his enthusiasm and joy to be there and receive another much deserved honour.
