Newcastle’s skipper Michael Owen has been awarded the Carling Player Of The Month award for September as chosen by the fans. He fought off competition from team-mates Shay Given, Charles N’Zogbia, Sebastien Bassong and Fabricio Coloccini who were all shortlisted by Bob Moncur and Lee Ryder for the vote.
Despite the lack of results for Newcastle, Owen scored 3 goals in 4 games and was influential on the field as captain throughout.
Moncur gave his conclusion to a bad month;
"It's disappointing not to be talking about a victory in September for the players. But the Player of the Month award is about individuals and there have still been some great performances. When results aren't going your way you look to your top players to put in a performance that others can feed off.
Unsurprisingly the majority of the candidates are from a defensive position after a hard working month. The experience of September will only help bring the squad closer together for the coming month."
Owen received 68% of the vote with Shay Given taking second place with 24%.
Lee Ryder, writer for The Chronicle agreed with the winning vote, he said;
"Hopefully the award will allow Michael to take a little bit of solace from what was a tough month. He was the deserved winner and not just because of his goals, whenever Michael plays he shows what a fantastic player he is.
Hopefully he will be back from his groin injury as soon as possible because he is so important to the team."
