Michael Owen will miss Newcastle's game against Manchester City on Monday after being injured in training on Wednesday and picking up a groin problem. With Joe Kinnear's squad already limited Owen will be the next player and one of the remaining strikers to clog up the physio room. Kinnear told Sky Sports News:
"He has sort of tweaked his groin in training. He had a scan and I would think we would be looking at between seven and ten days.
He won't be involved for the Manchester City match, but he would have a realistic chance, say 50/50 for the Sunderland game. It is a massive blow really.
He is always liable to nick a goal and we will miss that. Having said that we have to kick that into touch and get on with that and we have worked with players who will be in contention to replace Michael."
Some half decent news for fans is that Obafemi Martins is now likely to start on Monday after recovering from a knee injury; however there are concerns that he is being rushed back a few weeks ahead of his scheduled November return.
Kinnear said:
"Oba's an option, and we've stepped up his training.
We were planning to keep him back but because this has happened he is in the first team squad, he did well yesterday and exceptionally well today as well.
He hasn't needed any other further treatment on his knee so that's a good sign.
He is in my mind to be involved in the match against Man City."
