Chris Hughton comes across as approachable, practical, down to earth & very aware of the situation at Newcastle United & has unfairly been forced into a role which automatically had its downfalls. The fans might want Keegan back, but Hughton is currently the next best thing, he is the only person leading these players out on a weekly basis & asking of them what the fans expect - winning football. Unfortunately for Hughton his time so far as caretaker manager has been tainted by Keegan's departure and an obviously lack of confidence on the pitch, not to mention owner Mike Ashley making a rare public appearance being cleverly photographed in NYC drinking away his cash, causing outrage amongst the fans. Newcastle have convincingly lost both games since Keegan left, but blame cannot be laid at Hughton's door. Despite many fans staying away from the games, those who went had to endure chants of "there is only 1 Mike Ashley" on their trip to London this weekend to see their side lose 3-1 to West Ham. A game for which West Ham were heavily backed to win by the bookies and pundits alike.

Hughton said after the game:

"It was always a massive game because it is important for a big club like ours to stay in the cup competitions for as long as is possible. A win is the best way to lift morale.

All my thoughts are getting the team ready and preparing them for the next game. All I think about after the game is whether there is anything I could have done better as a coach."

It's also obvious to Hughton, that the upheaval at the club is having a big affect on the team and club morale he said:

"The sooner it all gets sorted out the better. That has been the case from day one. All we can do in the meantime is our best.

We were unlucky with the first goal because there were two deflections. The last thing you want to happen is to concede an early goal against what we knew would be an offensive side.

Then we let in a second and the third early in the second half. But we showed spirit to come back and now all we can do is prepare the players for the next game."

Unfortunately if today's press reports are anything to go by, Hughton, who has already said he does not want the job fulltime, could be in post for a while yet as it is believed 8 potential candidates for the managers role have turned it down.
