Keegan's Statement

By Tyne-Talk
September 5 2008

Kevin Keegan has wished Newcastle United well in a statement released confirming his time at the club has come to an end. He put forward his reasons for leaving the club and has expressed his sympathy for the supporters who are still calling his name from the walls of St James' Park in protest at the managerial decisions being made by the board. Keegan said:

"I've been working desperately hard to find a way forward with the directors, but sadly that has not proved possible," Keegan said in a statement.

It's my opinion that a manager must have the right to manage and that clubs should not impose upon any manager any player that he does not want."

It remains my fervent wish to see Newcastle United do well in the future and I feel incredibly sorry for the players, staff and most importantly the supporters.

I have been left with no choice other than to leave."

I dont think we should read too much into these stories doing the rounds.

Im sure if everything else was ok and the club were not selling players from under him, KK would not have had a problem with these youngsters been brought in.

That's not really the point though. KK isn't looking to fault these players but if he knows nothing about them he can hardly claim to approve of them. To be honest, I still don't really know anything about these guys and the truth is that they're both longshots to be impact players in this league. The whole point of this dispute is Keegan's insistence on getting the players he wants, which obviously didn't happen.

He said the only player he got that he'd asked for was Guthrie. All the rest were chosen by Wise & Co. Not bad signings though. This was reported on Sky yesterday.

The ones we have made look good. He issue was probably more with the ones he didnt make or couldnt make as a result of the new guys he didnt ask for. Thats not to say they wont be good signings, just not his choice.

IMO all managers should have the last word on signings but its becoming rarer.

I'm saying it now, the only signings about whom I'm convinced are Guthrie and Jonas...jury's out on Colo and the two new guys.

Give Colocini time and I'm sure he'll become a valuable team member

I'll watch the spot, Luke, but I've heard that line too many times to start counting our 'good signings' a month into the season.
