Gunners Gunning For Given

By Tyne-Talk

Arsenal are poised to make a £4million move for Newcastle United keeper Shay Given in a bid to fill the gap left by Jens Lehmann who left for Stuttgart. Given who joined Newcastle from Blackburn in 1997 for £1.5million is rumoured to have a testimonial in the pipeline but could welcome the move after another season at St James' Park without silverware. The 32 year old has been outstanding over the years and firmly secured his place as the clubs first keeper, by the end of the 2005/2006 season he had missed just 2 premiership games in 5 seasons, however injury ruled him out of many games last season allowing patient, understudy Steve Harper to take his place on the pitch giving him a rare run of games in the Premier League.

Fans have since speculated whether Shay would have to fight for his place back or whether Keegan would automatically reinstate him into the starting line-up.

Given is amongst the top 5 Premier League keepers and Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan is not expected to stand in the way should terms be agreed between the clubs and player.

would be pretty screwed if Harper decided he had had enough.... and perhaps left then Given was poached.

bear in mind the source of this - though it wouldnt suprise me if Wenger went for him it did come from News of the World

He has saved our bacon more times than I can remember. He has never had a reliable defence to make his job easier but has still established himself as a world class keeper. He would flourish at a big club like Arsenal...it would be a big loss to us.

I'd hate to see him go.

on the other hand, joe, he stuck by us when we were going nowhere, and arguably kept us up once or twice. if he said he wanted to play champs league for a few years before he gets too old i'd thank him for all he has done and wish him all the best. not that i want him to go, but for a world class player to stick by us the way he has is remarkable, and should be remembered if he does now ask to leave

Agreed, exile. I don't think the club should stand in his way. It would be, for an aging footballer, a great opportunity.

would hate to see him go but if he did we need to try get more than £4mil for such a good keeper.

I had the same thought at first Nathan, but I'm not sure the 30+ year old GK market warrants it. Let's make a game of this. Can we remember fees paid for keepers we consider comprable? I know Gordon went for £9M but he's just a kid and has a very high ceiling.

Anyone?

Let him go to a bigger club. Hes been here for 10 good years. I think he's earned the right to have a crack at the Champions League and Premier League with Arsenal.

Will leave room for our young keepers to get a chance between the sticks by deputising for Harper.

Van der Sar went to Man United for peanuts, I think... £2m or so?

Duff's house is up for sale to....perhaps the area isnt as good as it used to be?

Lol

Seriously though just because someone's house is on the market doesnt mean they are necessarily leaving does it?
Not so say he isnt... just can't see that being a solid indication

Shane Given reminds me of an Australian Rules footballer for St Kilda over here in Australia called Robert Harvey. Harvey has won the brownlow two consecutive times in 97/98 and played for St Kilda for 18 seasons which is his only club. Harvey has never won any silverware. Bit like Given search him up on wikipedia.

I wouldn't blame him for leaving...and I certainly wouldn't resent him as he has been a true legend at our club.

He has stuck around for far longer than most would have.

I would just be dissapointed thats all.

It would be sad to see him go, but then again it would be nice to have a class lad like Given be able to raise the PL or CL trophy.

Plus he's ageing and we could use the cash.

To be honest 4million isn't much for a player like Given who has served the club so well in fact it's a disgrace. Although you can compare to the prices James has been transferred for and he is arguably the best goalkeeper in the premier league. And than you ghet keepers like the sunderland who was bought for about 9million, which is embarassing to Sunderland.

Meh... a couple of years ago I'd of been concerned. Dont get me wrong he is a great servant to the Toon and is one of the best around. But I dont think he will ever be the same as he was before that day in West Sham.

With Harper champing at the bit and our clutch of great young talent. I think now could be the time to cash in.
