Today's most recent transfer reports are linking Valencia striker Nikola Zigic with a move to Newcastle United as manager Kevin Keegan looks to reinforce his strike force due to the futures of Obafemi Martins and Michael Owen repeatedly being doubted and Mark Viduka likely to miss the beginning of the season through injury.
Zigic's agent Milan Calasan has told Sky Sports.com of his client's desire to play in England and his interest in Newcastle, but also confirmed that Valencia have made no indication as to whether the 27 year old features in their plans for next season.
Calasan said:
"Yes Nikola would be interested in a move to Newcastle as he has always wanted to play in England. There are many clubs interested in Nikola including some from Italy, but we are waiting to see what Valencia want to do.
We do not know if Valencia want to keep him or sell him."
The Serbian International joined Valencia last season from Racing Santander for £14million; he made just 14 appearances in La Liga and scored just once.
The 6ft5in player was last month linked with Bolton, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur who were allegedly all represented in Dublin as the Republic of Ireland hosted Serbia in what finished a 1-1 draw.
It has also been rumoured that Jose Enrique will be a part of whatever deal is made, seeing him leave Newcastle to join Valencia.
O.K. this is really sad to see Newcastle back to their old ways if this is true. The 27 year-old has hardly made an impact with his first season at Valencia. It's really scare with rumours flying around such that Keegan might have to swap Jose Enrique for Zigic. Jose Enrique is beginning to adapt to the english game and flare with potential and now he is rumoured to be included in a dud deal. I would be really, really dissapointed to see Newcastle pay over 4million for Zigic and would be distraught if Jose Enrique was involved. I can honestly see Jose Enrique become one of the best left backs in the premier league in the next 5 years.
I agree on the Enrique front. However NEWCASTLE have not mentioned this I havent seen a single line of enquiry - the talk is coming from Zigic's camp and they are saying he would like Newcastle.
Nothing so far (that I have seen) to even suggest a toon interest. So don't start panicking just yet.
Yeah there's another article on it on www.goal.com and says that Keegan is interested and might have to offer Jose Enrique to get Zigic. Zigic has hardly even made an impact at Valencia so I would be suprised to see any premier league clubs interested in him. Maybe Sunderland might have a go for him.
A deal like this wouldn't be much worse than sabotage.
Yeah, let's swap an extremely young quality defender for an overrated and overpriced forward that we may or may not actually need (if Viduka comes back on form and Martins and Owen pick up where they left off this guy would not start).
The price is too high, we can't give up any quality defenders, we need to enlarge the squad and this is not the club's problem position right now. No, no, no, NO!
I can't believe this, the guy is a 27 year-old mature striker and hasn't scored goals consistently since playing in the serb league. This is why Newcastle has a bad reputation because they waste there time with 27 year-old duds. If Zigic was say 22 it would be a different story.
Strikers shouldn't be taking the majority of our scouts' attention right now. I'd be willing to take a flyer on the guy if he were cheap, but...this does seem like a Keegan-esque pickup but he's gotta come for a lot less than the number I've heard to be worth it to the Toon.
