NUFC.co.uk has announced their official Newcastle United player of the year for the 2007/2008 season. The results were polled on the website and Habib Beye took top place impressively beating top scorer Michael Owen. Paris born Senegalese defender Beye joined the club on 31st August 2007 and has played 30 games this season scoring 1 goal and picking up 5 yellow cards. The award is the top appreciation for the 30 year olds first season into a 3 year contract at the club.

The Results

Habib Beye 33.6%

Michael Owen 19.9%

Nicky Butt 18.1%

Obafemi Martins 10.1%

Steve Harper 6.7%

Just last month manager Kevin Keegan applauded Beye who has remained determined to succeed all season. He said:

"The guy is going out there looking like its life and death almost. He has that attitude.

Habib Beye has got tremendous athleticism. He is a good man around the dressing room, and I think you can tell the fans are really taking to him because they can see that commitment.

There are a lot of things that get the crowd going here: one is exciting football, like the third goal against Reading on Saturday.

The other is a good tackle and Habib Beye can certainly do that."

Not my first choice, but fully deserved. Good on the lad. He delivered from the torture that was watching Carr play.
thumbs down

that top 5 is rather harsh on milner, he was our main man in most of the games he played, and was unlucky to be injured for so many games toward the end of the season.

only butt started more games than milner of the 5 listed above, milners problem is that he played most of his games in a struggling team. i would go for butt as player of the season, for consistency, effort, no little skill, and the first 30 min of the home derby when he refused to let sunderland play, which killed the game and made sure we won. he simply wouldnt be beaten that day.

milner 2nd, beye 3rd.

I'd say:

1. Beye
2. Milner
3. Martins/Harper

Yep, I'd have to select Butt too. He seemed to be the least perturbed by the Toon's horrible mid-season run. Very composed-giving you just what you'd expect.

For me:

1. Nicky Butt
2. Habib Beye
3. Michael Owen-his goals did keep us from relegation...
