Match Preview/Thread: Newcastle V Reading

By Tyne-Talk
April 4 2008

Newcastle United host Reading this weekend with Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan insisting win and we are safe. Reading have won 3 of their last 6 games in the Premier League whilst Newcastle have won just 2, however Newcastle have recently found their form. However the 2 side's stats for the season are spookily similar indicating that both clubs approach the match on even ground.

With Reading just 3 points behind Newcastle a win could force them up the table; both teams have won 9 games, scored 58 goals and conceded 37.

Newcastle are still without Shay Given, James Milner, Peter Ramage, Claudio Cacapa and possibly Stephen Carr who is recovering from a hamstring injury. Emre who scored against Reading last season, adds his name to the ever growing injury list after aggravating his calf injury in his return to action for the reserves last week and is likely to be out for another 3 weeks.

Keegan looks set to start with Martins, Owen and Viduka, who left White Hart Lane last weekend struggling with a tight hamstring, after the success of his last 2 games.

Steve Coppell is without midfielder Marek Matejovsky who is serving a one match ban, Jimmy Kebe who is suffering from a knee injury, Graeme Murty, also suffering from a knee injury and Brynjar Gunnarsson who has a groin problem. However Glenn Little, who returns after a year's absence from an Achilles injury and Kalifa Cisse may feature.

Keegan said ahead of the match:

"The Reading game now becomes the biggest game of the season for us,

Three points there and I think we should be safe - I've always said 40 points but with teams down the bottom having to play each other - probably less than 40 will do.

A win against Reading should see us stay in the Premier League next year but that's not 100 per cent because you are trying to predict results in football which is not easy.

There will be twists and turns but we have the destiny of this club in our hands now, whereas a few weeks ago it looked like we might need a bit of help from elsewhere."

Regarding last weekend's win over Spurs Keegan said

"Look at the performance at Spurs, It was a team that played with confidence, and played with belief that we could only get from winning a football match.

Although people have taken the accolades away from us because Spurs weren't very good that day, I think we were so good that whoever we would have played that day would have had a struggle against us."

Newcastle:

Harper, Forster, Beye, Enrique, Taylor, Faye, Edgar, Butt, N'Zogbia, Duff, Barton, Geremi, Owen, Smith, Martins, Viduka, Carroll.

Reading:

Hahnemann, Federici, Rosenior, Bikey, Ingimarsson, Duberry, Shorey, Oster, Harper, Cisse, Hunt, Fae, Doyle, Kitson, Long, de la Cruz, Sonko, Little, Convey.

Nah, that's OK. The dense layer of chemical soot hanging over the whole of Teesside actually prevents any of the carbon monoxide leaking out and infecting the rest of the atmosphere. Pity the same can't be said of its natives.
