Finally, a Defender - Newcastle Resign Bernard

By Nick Raynor
September 1 2006

Newcastle United have signed Oliver Bernard for his second spell at Newcastle despite the transfer window being shut.

Roeder was able to sign the Frenchman as he was out of contract after being released by Rangers.

Although not as good as Wayne Bridge, who many Magpie fans wanted, Bernard is a defender which is desperately needed at St. James’ Park.

He was also popular amongst fans when he last played at St. James’ Park, proving a valuable member of the squad at left-back.

However, the Frenchman left the club in 2005 after a row over his pay, with him believing it was too low.

But with a bit of extra depth in the defence now, Toon fans will be a little more confident of the season ahead.
