Battle with Boro for Woody

Newcastle United and North-East rivals Middlesbrough are battling to sign Jonathon Woodgate.

The Real Madrid defender’s chances of first team football have dropped after the arrival of a new coach, and World Cup winner, Fabio Cannavaro.

The former Leeds and Newcastle centre-back left Newcastle for £13.4 million to join Madrid, but has been hampered with injury, playing just 14 games in 2 years.

However, Woodgate remains a legend at St. James’ Park, as when he was fit, he was the heart of a strong Toon defence.

Newcastle’s 2-0 loss to Villa on Sunday highlighted the defensive frailties the team has, and Roeder will be looking to bring a fresh face in before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

However, Boro manager, Gareth Southgate has admitted the club have approached Real and Woodgate over a possible loan deal.

Southgate said:

"We've had discussions with him and he wants time to think about what he wants to do.

"We've done everything we can to try and make it happen."
