Given: We Deserved to Lose

Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given has admitted that Newcastle deserved to lose 2-0 to Aston Villa.

The defeat saw the end of a 12-game unbeaten run in the Premiership for Newcastle.

It was a lacklustre performance by the Magpies, Titus Bramble in particular, and a game which also saw debutant, Obafemi Martins, stretchered off with a dead leg that has him out for 2 weeks.

Given said:

"It was not very good. We didn't play well. We had a fair bit of possession but it doesn't mean anything if you don't create chances and score goals. We are very disappointed.

"I don't think we were outclassed or outplayed by a better team. I felt Villa were there for the taking but we just didn't perform.

"To end the unbeaten run is disappointing but we didn't really do ourselves justice."
