Newcastle United have confirmed the £10 million signing of Obafemi Martins from Inter Milan.

The Nigerian international completed a move to Tyneside today after it was confirmed by manager, Glenn Roeder yesterday.

The 21-year-old will be a welcome relief to Toon fans who only had Shola Ameobi and Albert Luque as strikers.

After the arrival of Hernan Crespo at Inter, Martins handed in a transfer request after becoming worried about a lack of first team football, something which is almost guaranteed at St. James’ Park.

The striker is best known for his blistering pace; running the 100m in 11 seconds.

He is also known for his goal celebrations where he launches into a series of backflips, similar to former Newcastle forward, Lua-Lua.

Martins is not expected to play in the UEFA Cup tie tonight against Ventspils, but is expected to make his debut against Aston Villa in the Premiership.
