Roeder on Transfers

As pressure amounts on Glenn Roeder to bring new players to St. James’ Park before the start of the season, here are some of the comments made by the man himself recently.

Damien Duff is the only name through the door, and Toon fans are happy with the £5 million paid for the Irishman.

However, the Magpies are desperate for another forward, and talk of getting a couple of defenders in has been made too.

Sol Campbell is the defender most heavily linked after claiming he’d like to come to Newcastle, but it seems that Glenn Roeder has dismissed it, at least according to Alan Oliver of the Evening Chronicle.

On Campbell, Roeder said:

"Sol is a fantastic talent and I am mystified why Arsenal have agreed that he should go."

But Roeder has previously said that although he was an admirer of Campbell, he was looking to bring younger players in, ruling out the veteran.

There are still links with the World Cup golden boot winner, Maroslav Klose, but Roeder again, stated he was an admirer of the striker, but hinted that Newcastle not having Champions League football may put the German off Newcastle.

On Klose, Roeder previously said:

“Miroslav Klose is a top-drawer player, the leading scorer at the World Cup finals,"

"I think that I will say what the chairman says, that I'm not ruling anyone in or out.

"Klose could possibly be looking for a Champions League club after winning the golden boot and we perhaps don't fit his remit if he were to move. But you can't help but admire his ability."

PSV’s Jefferson Farfan has been linked with the Magpies too, but has recently signed a new deal at PSV, plus Roeder admits he wants a different type of striker.

On Farfan, Roeder told the Evening Chronicle:

"Farfan was one of several excellent players in the PSV side but we are looking at different positions from the one he plays in and there is no interest in him,"

With many targets or rumours ruled out, Newcastle fans will get more anxious as time ticks down to the opening game against Wigan.
