Second year scholar Steve Davies stole the show at Rivacre Park as his impressive first half brace helped Tranmere to a comfortable 3-0 victory against Vauxhall Motors on Friday night. Eugene Dadi headed home a third in the second half to ensure a good win for Rovers in their opening friendly.

As he did during pre-season last year, Manager Brian Little opted for a different side in each half in order to give as many players as possible a chance to show what they are capable of.  In the both halves, the sides chosen by Little represented fairly strong line-ups with a mix of first-teamers and youth in each side.  New signings Sam Aiston and goalkeeper Steve Wilson appeared in the first half side but John Achterberg missed out in this game with a slight injury problem.

It was one of the unheard of youngsters who made a name for himself in the first half although his name will have been heard of many times before in relation to another sport – step forward Steve Davies.  Tranmere’s second year scholar put Rovers in front just short of the half hour mark with a superb left foot shot from the edge of the penalty area and just five minutes later he was put through on goal again by a McAteer pass but despite his chip beating the keeper, it went agonisingly wide of the target.

Just a couple of minutes later though, the youngster had his and Tranmere’s second when Ryan Taylor picked up the ball and ran at the Vauxhalls defence before squaring the ball to Steve Davies for him to tap home from around six yards.

Following a full change of personnel in the second half, it took Rovers just eight minutes to add a third goal through Eugene Dadi who fooled two Vauxhalls defenders with a crafty run before heading Olly James corner into the net for 3-0.

Other second half chances fell to youngsters Chris Dagnall and Carl Tremarco but both were denied by the in-form Vauxhalls keeper.

What the Boss Thought…..

Tranmere Boss Brian Little (Speaking to the Official Website):

"It didn't do any of the young lads any harm. I think a lot of Steve Davies and he's done well to score two goals.

"I thought Calvin Zola did well and Carl Tremarco looked sharp. There was nothing that has gone on that has disappointed us.

"It's just another training session for us. We've put two teams out that aren't bad."
