Every season, there is a surprise player who makes a name for themselves. For me, I felt that Mark Rankine surprised everyone, especially his first home game against Racing Santander, where he didn't exactly impress. But now he is one of the key members of the team, and one of the first to go on the team sheet.

So we look at who we think is the underdog for this season, what we mean is, who hasn't exactly stuck their thumb out so far, but has the potential to go all the way.

Steven Jennings : With both central midfielders, Jason McAteer and Mark Rankine not getting any younger, Jennings definitely has everything to make the centre of the park his own. Steven has had many spells in the reserves, and captaining the side aswell. But like most, hasn't really made it on the first tem scene. Last season, he made a few cameo appearances coming of the bench, but when I have seen him play for the reserves, he is certainly one who always catches my eye. He is assertive in midfield and is clever on the ball. And I think he has everything going for him this season, and perhaps Paul Hall going was just the news he was waiting for, as Jennings can also play on the right hand-side. I think his versatility and the ages of Rankine and McAteer, means he will get a lot of games this upcoming season.

Danny Harrison : Another young central midfielder, Danny has had his fair share of oppurtunites in the previous seasons, and has played well in his game overall. Perhaps more defensive then Jennings, but has recently filled the gaps when McAteer or Rankine have either been injured, suspended or needed a rest. Harrison played his heart out when he came on after 20 minutes for the injured McAteer in the Play Off Semi Final Second Leg, and looks very promising. I feel in the future Jennings and Harrison will be the central partnership, and will certainly be capable of doing wonders for the club. Harrison has had more experience than Jennings at first team football, after he player 32 times when Brian Little was first in charge, but went down the pecking order with the summer signings of Rankine and McAteer.

Calvin Zola : Although he had a season blighted with residency issues, he certainly showed what he was capable off. The giant striker has enough to put any defender off, and Rovers have to use this to their advantage. He has power and pace for a tall man, and plays a lot like Southamptons, Peter Crouch. Hopefully he can become a good striking partner for Iain Hume. Many strikers have been tried and tested to partnership Hume, non of yet have sealed their fates, so Zola must be thinking, he has to make an impact. I also think Calvin wants to prove himself and thank everyone on the pitch, which he has stated, who helped him through his ordeal.

Carl Tremarco : Only played a handful of games, due to the consistency of left back, Gareth Roberts, but has a crunching tackle and is a great player to watch. After watching him in reserves, he shows that he doesnt take any prisoners, so to speak, and for a small guy, he packs a punch. Altough he will have a tough time to brake down Gareth Roberts, I feel if Little opts to play Gareth on the left of midfield, then Carl can slot in at his natural position of left back.
