We’ve been here before, it’s Deja Vu all over again! An end of season struggle to retain our League status. Pete Wild is doing his best, but it’s down to the players. In the space of a week we have had two contrasting performances. The sheer lack of application against Harrogate and the determination shown against Swindon. The outcome was the same. Nothing. Given that football is a results based business, we ain’t getting the results.
Everybody has their own theory as to why this season has gone so wrong. We travel to Shrewsbury on Good Friday desperate for points. Fortunately tye two week gap between fixtures might help. Players who have been absent will be nearer to return. Rumour has it that two or three long term injuries will be back by then. People coming back to fitness when we need them most adds to the sense of hope. Sol Solomon playing in an attacking role gave us something more, and Kane Wollery looked Lacey when he came on.
It’s also getting to the stage where other clubs are doing us favours. On Saturday all the teams below us lost, so the cushion remains the same. However,our postponed game against Cheltenham could mean that we are only three points clear of the chasing pack by Good Friday. That might have a negative effect on confidence.
Meanwhile, Pete Wild’s interview after the Swindon defeat at least seemed honesty, as he did after the debacle against Harrogate. He mentioned nobody by name, but he didn’t have to. We know who is under performing, and we know they don’t deserve to be in the matchday squad. Wild is in a win:win situation. If he fails he will still be seen as having done his best with the limited talents available to him. If he succeeds, and avoiding relegation would count as this, he can walk away with considerable pride. Whether he would want to stay is another matter. Andy Crosby seems to have been promised a brave new dawn after new owners arrive. Yet the cavalry have yet to appear across the hill. Pete has the experience of putting together teams on a shoestring, it looks increasingly likely that there will be no huge injection of cash anytime soon.
The other investment is the renewal of season tickets. We are in the early bird period at the moment. Voices around me are questioning whether they will renew. This seems to happen most seasons, but there is a difference to the weary tones I am hearing. Many seem to have had enough. Not renewing a season ticket doesn’t mean you don’t support the team, but it’s a clear indication of how prepared people are to invest in the club. I am reminded of the Proclaimers song, ‘over and done with’. Whilst this season may not be about ‘watching a man dying’, our fan base seems to be starting to turn their back. This can’t be good.
A 12 day break now. Let’s hope, to recall a phrase from the past, we ‘come back stronger’. Games are running out.

In the many decades of watching Rovers there have been times (other than the PJ) era when there was a collective sense of renewal and momentum, reflected in very healthy attendances. The last time it was strongly evident was the early period of MP's ownership. That has long been extinguished and thus far any potential change of ownership does not strike the spark produced by the last change. On the contrary, it raises the fear of asset strippers.
On the other hand, our supporters are resilient and in my view are the biggest positive about the club at this time. My guess is that most will continue to hang in, putting loyalty above entertainment, disappointment, and even hope
