Midfielder Alan Mahon is one of three players in his second spell with
Tranmere Rovers, having re-signed for the club in July 2009 on a
three-year contract.
Mahon, born in Dublin, Ireland, was picked up by Tranmere as a youngster and made his name for the Prenton Park club during the 1990s, making 144 appearances and scoring 14 goals for the club as they made it to the F.A. Cup Quarter Final and League Cup Final in 2000, with Mahon scoring a vital goal in the semi-final second leg against Bolton Wanderers at Prenton Park.
After his contract expired in July 2000, Mahon joined Sporting Lisbon in Portugal, but failed to ever impress in Europe, despite making his debut against Real Madrid, and joined Blackburn Rovers a year after leaving England, this following a loan spell with the Ewood Park club earlier that season.
Mahon stayed at Blackburn for three years, but was never a first team regular, and after loan spells with Cardiff and Ipswich, he joined Wigan for an undisclosed fee in February 2004.
At Wigan, Mahon was much more successful and he played in the Premier League for the club, before spending time on loan at Burnley, where he eventually signed permanently for £200,000 in June 2006.

Injuries played a huge part in Mahon's career at Burnley though, as he missed several games due to a lack of fitness and following the clubs promotion to the Premier League in 2009, Mahon was released, joining Tranmere shortly afterwards.
In his youth, Mahon was a winger, but now the wrong side of thirty, the player's preferred position is as a centre-midfielder, where he can have a crucial influence on the side thanks to his creative passing and excellent vision.
However, fitness issues have sprung up for Mahon in recent years, with the midfielder missing a large portion of the 2009/10 campaign due to niggling injuries, and then being ruled out until Christmas this season due to a knee injury.
