Hartlepool United were today deducted three points by the Football League after they fielded an ineligible player in the 2-0 home win over Brighton and Hove Albion on Easter Monday meaning that the fight to avoid relegation from League One now includes four teams rather than three ahead of the crucial final set of games....

Initial news filtering through in the local media in the North East suggested that Pools were set to escape any kind of points deduction but under an hour later the decision of the Football League was confirmed and Pools face an instant three point deduction as well as a £10,000 fine which is suspended for twelve months, to be activated if the club re-offend within that twelve month period.

All this news means that Hartlepool, having been in 16th place in League One this morning, now sit in 19th place, just one point ahead of both Tranmere in the last relegation place and Exeter City who are in 20th and ahead of Rovers on goal difference.

For Tranmere, the scenario hasn't changed and they still need ideally a win and at worst a draw to try and stay up in League One but should they manage to get the all important three points, they are now relying on one more team winning rather than just Gillingham and Exeter.

Hartlepool have been given 28 days to appeal against the points deduction but it is likely that they will wait to see whether or not they are relegated on Saturday afternon and if they are it leaves a huge mess with regard to a possible appeal.

Meanwhile Total Tranmere is reminding all fans that Saturday's game at Stockport which is now sold out, is a 'Wear Something White' day with the team also playing in white for the big game.
