All the News and Statistics ahead of the visit of Crewe Alexandra to Prenton Park on Saturday afternoon in Coca-Cola League One as Rovers look to continue their unbeaten run stretching back over six league games and maintain their excellent home form.

It’s Friday night fever again at Prenton Park this week as this time the visitors are near neighbours Crewe Alexandra who visit Prenton Park for the first time in over three years.

 

Rovers head into the game unbeaten in their last six league matches both home and away, having clocked up four wins, followed by two draws in the recent away trips to Scunthorpe and Brentford.

 

Alex on the other hand have won just one and drawn two of their last six matches, losing the other three.  Away from home the visitors have lost five and won one of their last six matches in the League.

 

At Prenton Park, Rovers have lost just once (to Port Vale) and drawn twice this season and have won their last three games standing them hopefully in good stead for this tricky game against Crewe.

 

Alex are the highest scorers in League One this season so far with a total of 37 goals scored and 23 of these being at home.  However, they are also the team that have conceded the most goals in League One (38 in total this season) so this would suggest that this game won’t finish up 0-0.

 

Crewe’s top-scorer this season is Luke Varney with 13 goals compared to Chris Greenacre with 9 goals for Rovers.

 

The two teams last met in March 2003 in League One at Prenton Park where Rovers triumphed 2-1 thanks to an Ian Sharps goal two minutes from time after Rob Hulse had earlier equalised Jason Price’s effort.

 

The 2-1 win for Rovers came as revenge for defeat at Crewe earlier in the season in a highly memorable game that saw Rovers lose goalkeeper John Achterberg to injury in the warm up and then lose his replacement Keith Welch midway through the second half again to injury.

 

That turn of events signalled the final appearance in a Rovers shirt in a competitive match for the legend that is Eric Nixon.

 

Despite a fantastic save from the old-timer, Rovers conceded two second half goals, one a bizarre headed own-goal from almost 30 yards by on loan midfielder Tom Curtis and the second a Rob Hulse strike.

 

With the rest of League One not in action until Saturday, Rovers have the chance to move level on points with second place Scunthorpe (but behind on goal difference) overnight, should they get the three points.
