The football world is in mourning, following the shocking news that Gary Speed has died.  I heard the news early this afternoon, and have been numb ever since.  Speed of course,played in our title winning side of 1991, as part of THAT midfield - along with Strachan, Batty and Macallister.  

Speed started out for us as a left midfielder, but could play anywhere - and often did.  A fantastic header of the ball, and a sweet left foot.

Reading the tributes on websites, twitter and SkySports, you realise what a popular bloke he was.  I met him a couple of times, and he always made time to sign an autograph and have a chat.  He seemed an easy going bloke, and was always well received on his return to Elland Road.

They say the best are always taken too young, and this is absoloutely true in this case.  The thoughts of all at unofficial Leeds United are with his wife, 2 children, and family.  

A very, very sad day that has affected a lot of grown men more than any other death I can remember.  RIP Gary, and thanks for some special memories.

Gary was one of my favourite players during the Wilko years and beyond. I met him on a couple of occassions and even as a young man he had the same generosity of spirit and fun that we saw on Saturday on Football Focus. He was a true sportsman, an ambassador for the game and a special man. My thouights are with his family.

My thoughts are with his family and friends and all those who are deeply saddened by this loss. The regard in which he is held by many is heartwarming and is a mark of the fine man he was. You contributed to some of the happiest days of my life Gary and i hope you rest in eternal peace.
