Grayson needs big changes

By Andy Baggott
May 29 2011

Leeds boss Simon Grayson is going to need to make some big changes before the start of next season.  Already he has lost almost half a team with loanees Sanchez Watt, Eric Lihaj and George Mcartney returning to their parent clubs, Richard Naylor released, whilst Neil Kilkenny and Bradley Johnson's contracts expire shortly, and both are expectef to move on.

Whilst major changes are needed at the back anyway, at least a couple of central midielders are now needed.  Various names are linked as usual, but Lee Bowyer has been released by Birmingham and might be one of the players targetted.  Nick Montgomery of Sheff Utd is another name that has long been linked, whilst at the back, Lichaj may well be targetted again after impressing in his loan spell.

With the Championship play off played tomorrow, come Tuesday, every team will know what division they will be in, and the transfer merry go round is expected to take shape...

IF we manage to keep our "crown jewels" i'd expecty to see at least 1GK ,1LB 1CB ,3CM's with 1 being a DCM and i also reckon we'll see Lihaj and Watt back .
Hopefully Kissa will prove his fitness and be like a new signing and Nunez and Clayton will prove ready to be considered for regular football which will boost the squad.
Plus there's the possibility that Thompson and Lees will push thruogh.

The only player worth replacing would be lihaj mcartney ect... can all go back because they wern't good enough simple as even young sanchez had his chances and didn't take them.

But it is evident we do deffinately need to replace richard naylor, bradley johnson, kilkenny,.

Which aren't loanees and we need cover for connely and parker.

No hints Peter? With comments as cryptic as that, some people may begin to think you're making this in-the-know stuff up...

You know i wonder just how much a "big draw" Leeds Utd really are these days to Players. The January transfer window just gone didn't do much for the credibility of Grayson and Bates as they weren't able to bring in any players on Graysons list.

So peterkk i remain to be convinced, I am always hopeful and always optimistic but I wonder though in reality if we will be able to attract players with the quality we need instead of maybe a few older heads who like Naylor, O'Brien etc are in the twilight of their careers.

Hope i'm wrong

You are right Alf. Money talks at this level - not any burning desire to play for x,y,or z.

Probably different when you bring the big boys into the equation. I could imagine someone wanting to sign for S cum or Liverpool etc because they are two of the biggest clubs in European football - and they would countenance the wage differential because although there is a difference between 50- 100k a week and 125-150k a week. Both figures are going to make you pretty wealthy.

In our league you are probably talking about the difference between 2-5 k and 5-10k or more (Hull,Boro, West Ham, Brum etc) so over the season this is a huge differential.

I know which figure I would go for every time. Just don't understand those who still believe that a player outside Leeds - or even Yorkshire - would have any burning desire to wear a white shirt. We ain't that big any more. We should accept that IMO.

i predict lots of ins again this summer, let hope the quality is better then the last one or that Grayson will use them this time around
Left back, Centre Back and 2 Centre Midfielders are needed for the first team with a Sub GK, Sub Centre Midfielder and maybe another sub forward

Lichaj is good so don't compare him to mccartney ffs. Watt wasnt given enough chances and his meekness in front of goals doesn help him..

Think you have misread Revies's post loleeds.

He was stating that only Lichaj (sic) was worth replacing. He just forgot the punctuation after "lihaj"thumbs down

Think Watt has probably had all the chances he is gonna get at ER. Didn't do enough to warrant a third spell for me. Plus SG hardly plays him and he is poor in front of goal.

I can honestly see us struggling next season, players see the pound sign loyalty to a club no longer exists.if we dont invest in the proper players and get ones in who can improve our defence and midfiled i think it will be a long hard season, and a bottom half finish.

Am quitely confident we will bring in the right players at the back and in midfield.

Also have an inkling SG will bring in another striker.

Mike's retired Guis.

Though he could have made a decent DCM.

Think we are after better players though.

I'm with BYL on this one - not convinced we will be able to bring in the quality we need - second season syndrome and long hard season awaits us imo.

Well if we can't bring in the 'quality' required there will only be one person to blame...BATES.

Would be hoping for GK,RB,LB,LB,CB,CB,DCM,DCM,CM,LM.
A few more than most due to likely injuries to Kisnorbo and Parker, Impending moves of Kilkenny and Johnson and general squad improvements.
I like Connolly,Bromby, Schmeical and Howson but would like genuine competetion for places

Bit of a guess but reckon Nicky Shorey might come in with one or Taylor/Parker/Turner as his back up/understudy.

As CW state above 8-10 signings looks about par for what we need and this is where i think alot of the "easily replacable" comments in regards to Kilkenny and Johnson look short sighted

One things for certain,we will have to get them in sharpish if we are going to have time to fashion a team/formation.
At least the expiring contracts and returned loanees have forced SG's hand. I look/hope to see a much changed midfield.
