Carlisle 1 Leeds 3

Leeds made it three wins on the bounce last night – and the nature of the victory indicates the confidence is slowly coming back to Simon Grayson’s men. Leeds’ start was electric – picking holes in the Carlisle defence at will. Richard Naylors early goal was chalked off for a foul, but Grayson’s men were not to be denied. Robert Snodgrass did as all football manuals say, and hit his 25 yard free kick on target – unfortunately for Carlisle, keeper Adam Collin hadn’t read his goalkeeping book properly and spilled the rather tame effort – the recalled Luciano Becchio was on hand to tap home.  It was the perfect start, and Leeds kept their foot on the gas.  Becchio missed a couple more chances, and Gradel went close.  Out of nothing though, the home side were level.  Leeds fans know all about the left peg of Ian Harte, and it was his driven free kick that got them back in the game – Richard Keogh diverting the ball into the Leeds net – there was still time for Snodgras to go close, but, somehow, it was level at the break.  With Leeds’ form being inconsistent to say the least, it was always going to be interesting to see how they would respond in the second half.  Any fears were swept aside though – almost immediately, Gradel fed Bromby out on the right, and his cross was met headed home by Gradel from 6 yards out.  5 minutes later, and the game was over – Gradel put Becchio through, and he finished low to the keepers right.  The two front men certainly justified the managers decision to play them ahead of top scorer Jermaine Beckford, who’s recent poor form had seen him consigned to a spell on the bench.  The game petered out after that – Carlisle, suffering badly from injuries kept up the work, without ever threatening to get back into the game – Leeds played out the last 30 minutes at little more than a stroll.  The game finished 3-1, and there was more good news when Yeovil held Millwall to a 1-1, meaning, with 4 games to go, Leeds are back in that all important second place, and automatic promotion is back in their hands…

Now that we area back in second place, there is much more optimism, but there must be no let up. We should finish the season in the same form as we started it. That will see us through.
