Sam called for big support and Dave Jones said he wanted to build on the Leeds victory. In reality 6,000 fans stayed away and the team surrendered to lose 3-1 to an organised Watford side who now must relish their trips to Ninian Park!
The sorry tale unfolds.....
You could sense something was going to go wrong when the City fans booed the Watford "huddle", how often have they cheered our little pre match scrums? Watford in a surpise change strip of all red looked positive and determined from the start and so it proved.....
Ex Nottingham Firest striker Marlon King scored in each half and his forward partner Darius Henderson piled on the heartache for a woeful Cardiff City team, who only had a Cameron Jerome goal as late consolation. Even after scoring the bluebirds failed to raise their game in the last ten minutes as the home crowd made fot the exits...
City made one change to their starting line-up with Ulsterman Philip Mulryne taking over in midfield from Willie Boland. But they were comprehensively outplayed and many CCFC players let themselves and a very poor crowd of just over 9,000 down.
This game proves that every team can raise it's game for "big matches" - we see it in the cup every season, but quality teams consistently perform and last night I think we saw what could be the start of a long hard season. I'll not bother with assessing individual performances as the whole team was poor, although to be fair to Alexander a couple of the goals did get slight deflections.
Sam's rallying cry to bring a friend fell on deaf ears and proves that the fickle Cradiff public will pick and chose the games they want to watch, those who stayed away made the right choice. Hopefully it didn't look so bad on TV!
... If any "friends" were dragged along they may be ex friends now!
Glen Hoddle was in the Grandstand and his Wolves come down in a fortnight, hopefully things will be in better order by then!
