The Bluebirds second-string fielded a strong side for their top-of-the-table reserve clash with Plymouth Argyle, and romped home to leapfrog the Devon club at the top of the table. The strength of Cardiff City's XI made the game a complete mis-match.
Several fringe Cardiff City players made a real point to Lennie Lawrence as a strong reserve side raced to a tremendous seven-goal victory at Home Park against league leaders Plymouth Argyle. Paul Wilkinson had the luxury of a fistful of senior players to choose from as he took City's second-string to Devon and returned with a sensational result.
Cardiff City named such a strong side that the likes of Stuart Fleetwood and Toni Koskela could only make there ways onto the bench. Tony Warner, Willie Boland, Andy Campbell, Lee Bullock, Alan Lee, Michael Boulding and Paul Parry were all included in the starting XI against a young, inexperienced Plymouth side who received a real morale dent as they were taught a real footballing lesson.
The rout started early. Cardiff were four up inside 15 minutes, and were six goals ahead at the break. The strike partnership of Lee and Boulding paid off in style with both netting braces, whilst Danny Parslow, Byron Anthony and Parry also got themselves on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, Willie Boland returned from injury with a battling 70 minutes in midfield and will now hope to join the Football League Championship survival fight.
The massive win for the Bluebirds saw them leapfrog their West County rivals, and could perhaps have a knock-on affect of the performance to the senior sides. Several players made a huge impact and will now hope to play a part in City's forthcoming Football League outings following the home reverse at the hands of Wigan Athletic.
