33-year-old John Robinson has quit Ninian Park and signed for Gillingham on a free transfer. The committed, battling midfielder has family problems, and has moved to Kent top be closer to his family.

Cardiff City's veteran midfielder John Robinson has left Ninian Park on a free transfer and joined Gillingham. The former Welsh international has had a torrid time of late with family troubles, and has been poor in the City shirt during his handful of appearances this term.

Robinson was always a favourite with the City fans for his committed and all action style, and his effort for the cause was always evident. Many feared when he joined the club from Charlton Athletic last season that he would treat Ninian Park as a retirement home, but last season Robinson was a crucial part of the City set-up as the Bluebirds managed a mid-table finish of 13th in England's second flight.

The Zimbabwe-born 33-year-old struggled to settle in South Wales after buying a house in Monmouthshire, and quickly moved back to the South-East to be closer to his family, with his mother suffering from illness. With competition for places now tough for Robinson, it would appear the move to fellow strugglers Gillingham is the best option for both club and player.
